The Central and Eastern European Association for Mission Studies was inaugurated in 2002 on the initiative of those in a leadership position at chairs in missiology in Central and Eastern Europe, or Mission Institutes. This blog will update you on recent developments, provide you with resources on mission and missiology from the region, report on conferences and serve as a means to keep in touch.

Invitation to inaugural meeting CEAMS
Budapest, 21 November 2002.
Dear Colleagues, dear friends,
Over the last few years missiologists from Central and Eastern Europe have met at various conferences, most recently at the International Association for Mission Studies-Europe conference in Halle, earlier in Breklum, Germany, at a consultation on "Believing without Belonging" and for the last three years or so at the Missiological Research Fellowship meetings of the Protestant Institute for Mission Studies in Budapest, Hungary. Others met recently in Rome at an IAMS conference on "Rescuing the memories of our people".
In these meetings we realized that we all face more or less the same struggles in formulating and addressing the missiological issues of our "post-communist" contexts and in introducing a new discipline in the theological curriculum: missiology. It also became clear, that we hardly know of what each of us is doing in the area of research, teaching and publications.
Since this - pioneering - situation in Central and Eastern Europe differs so much from countries in e.g. Western Europe where missiology has been well established for many many years, the need was increasingly felt to establish a special Central and Eastern European international and interdenominational platform to serve and coordinate the small initiatives in this field, linked internationally to the International Association of Mission Studies.
On behalf of those in a leadership position at chairs in missiology in Central and Eastern Europe, or Mission Institutes: Dr. Peter Penner (International Baptist Theological Seminary), the reverent Dr. Sergei Shikorov (Moscow Center for Mission Studies), Drs. Sándor Gaál and Drs. László Gonda (Reformed University of Divinity in Debrecen) and the Reformed Theological Academy in Papa, it is a great honour for me to invite you to participate in a reception on the occasion of the inauguration of the Central and Eastern European Association for Mission Studies (CEAMS)to be held in Budapest, Hungary, in the Protestant Institute for Mission Studies, on Thursday afternoon November 28th, 2002, at 6 p.m.
Predecing this reception the inaugural meeting will be held at 4 p.m. We are thankful that the General Secretary of the IAMS, Birger Nygaard, will be present at this meeting. At the inaugural meeting an executive committee will be established. We ask you to suggest names for those to participate in this committee.
We ask you to let us know at the latest on November 25th whether you will participate in these meetings. Those of you who cannot be present at this meeting we invite you to send your written adhesions and greetings, by November 27 at the latest.
The aims of CEAMS will be similar to those of IAMS:
* To promote the scholarly study of theological, historical and practical questions relating to mission in Central and Eastern Europe
* To disseminate information concerning mission among all those engaged in such studies and among the general public;
* To relate studies in mission to studies in theological and other disciplines
* To promote fellowship, cooperation and mutual assistance in mission studies
* To organize international conferences of missiologists
* To encourage the creation of centers of research
* And to stimulate publications in missiology
Among the plans how to reach those aims the following plans have been suggested:
* To organize annual conferences, the first to be planned in Budapest in June 2003, with the theme: Towards a 21st century in Christian mission in Central and Eastern Europe.
* To establish a missiological journal for CEE
* To launch study projects like the IAMS one: "Rescuing the memories of our people".
Membership of the CEAMS will be open to those active in research into or in the practice of Christian mission and to institutions active in this field. A moderate membership fee will be established.
Looking forward to welcoming you at the inaugural meeting, or to hearing from you in written form,
Yours sincerely in Christ,
Dr. Anne-Marie Kool
